This past spring, I had the opportunity to take part in a Coach’s Clinic put on by the Toronto Argonauts for minor league football coaches. Michael “Pinball” Clemons addressed the group with a very inspiring message, and then took questions and answers.
One of the participants asked Pinball what his most memorable moment in sports was. Bear in mind that this question was asked of an athlete who is a three time Grey Cup winner as a player and once as a coach. Mr. Clemons has had his jersey retired as a result of his accomplishments and successes. One would imagine that Pinball has a multitude of moments to choose from in answering this question, and yet with barely a pause, he recalled this story:
As an 8 year-old boy playing baseball in a Police Association League for inner-city kids in Florida, a young Michael Clemons didn’t feel a part of the team because he didn’t bat well. His coach, who was the local Pharmacist, called Michael into the store one day and presented him with a batting glove so that he would feel more a part of the team and believe in himself and his abilities. It was a simple act of kindness that would have a deep impact.
As the award-winning athlete and coach related this story as his “most memorable moment in sports”, his eyes welled up and his voice cracked. This was not a practiced and polished speech. This was evidence of what a VOLUNTEER did for this young boy and how an act of kindness and humanity helped to shape his life.
That is why I volunteer with youth. Be it as a coach with TNT Express, the Banting Marauders football program, or through my involvement with Big Brothers/Big Sisters South Simcoe, if I can affect just one youth in such a manner as Pinball Clemons was moved that day just by my presence on the field, or by being a mentor that someone can talk to, then what more could I ask for?
I consider the hours I spend volunteering to be enjoyable, productive and well spent. If you have ever uttered the words “What is this world coming to?” then I urge you to fight back by getting involved in something you love and help to make a difference.
Sincerely,
Paul Conry |
